How this port works

This is a static recompilation: tooling mechanically translates the original console binary into PC code rather than rewriting the game by hand. The result runs natively, typically with an uncapped framerate and widescreen.

Static recompilation of a PSP game into a native executable. Vulkan and SDL3. Bring your own copy of the game.

How to install

  1. 01You need your own Monster Hunter Portable 3rd disc image for PSP. The game never released outside Japan, so the copy is the Japanese one — and the project offers community text translations as a separate file, installed afterwards from the game's own menu.
  2. 02The simplest route is to download the latest stable release, which comes prebuilt. Building it yourself is also supported and documented.
  3. 03The game executable is prepared from your image by the program itself, using its install option pointed at your .iso. No external decryption tool is needed.
  4. 04After that, the image and the prepared executable are linked into the game profile by the scripts that ship with the project.
  5. 05To build it: CMake 3.20 or newer, Ninja, a C++20 compiler, Python 3, SDL3, Vulkan and glslangValidator. On macOS and Linux you also need make and a C compiler, because the build makes its own FFmpeg for the music and the movies; on Windows it does not.
  6. 06Set aside a few gigabytes of free memory for the build — the recompiled code is large, and running out of memory is the most common cause of a halted build.
  7. 07Status: playable. Read the release notes before filing a problem.

Frequently asked

Do I need the original game to play Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on PC?

Yes. The project distributes no game data — you supply your own copy or dump. Every project in this scene works this way, and it is what lets them stay publicly hosted on GitHub.

What does "recompiled" mean?

This is a static recompilation: tooling mechanically translates the original console binary into PC code rather than rewriting the game by hand. The result runs natively, typically with an uncapped framerate and widescreen.

Will Monster Hunter Portable 3rd run on a low-end PC?

Native ports and recompilations skip CPU emulation entirely, so they are usually far lighter than an emulator for the same console. With no published measurement for this project, though, any estimate would be guesswork — test it on your own machine.

When was Monster Hunter Portable 3rd released?

The original game shipped in 2010, developed by Capcom and published by Capcom. This PC port is from 2026.

Which systems does it support?

The current release (v0.7.5) ships builds for Windows, Linux, macOS. The game originally shipped on PSP.

Is it legal to use?

The project is public and open source, maintained by TeamGDB, and contains nothing from the commercial game. Responsibility for the game copy you use is yours — which is why the developers require you to supply your own.
