How this port works

This is a static recompilation: tooling mechanically translates the original console binary into PC code rather than rewriting the game by hand. The result runs natively, typically with an uncapped framerate and widescreen.

Unofficial static recompilation of the Xbox 360 version of Need for Speed: Carbon (2006): a native port for Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame, Linux and Mac, plus a Windows beta (iPhone/iPad: sideload the experimental IPA or build it yourself). Bring your own disc: no game files included. Not affiliated with EA or Valve.

Frequently asked

Do I need the original game to play Need for Speed: Carbon on PC?

Yes. The project distributes no game data — you supply your own copy or dump. Every project in this scene works this way, and it is what lets them stay publicly hosted on GitHub.

What does "recompiled" mean?

This is a static recompilation: tooling mechanically translates the original console binary into PC code rather than rewriting the game by hand. The result runs natively, typically with an uncapped framerate and widescreen.

Will Need for Speed: Carbon run on a low-end PC?

Native ports and recompilations skip CPU emulation entirely, so they are usually far lighter than an emulator for the same console. With no published measurement for this project, though, any estimate would be guesswork — test it on your own machine.

When was Need for Speed: Carbon released?

The original game shipped in 2006, developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts. This PC port is from 2026.

Which systems does it support?

The current release (v0.1.1) ships builds for Linux, macOS, iOS. The game originally shipped on Xbox 360.

Is it legal to use?

The project is public and open source, maintained by SpeedBreakerProject, and contains nothing from the commercial game. Responsibility for the game copy you use is yours — which is why the developers require you to supply your own.
