How this port works

This is a native port: the game was rebuilt to run as a real PC program with no emulator in the loop. That usually means better performance, arbitrary resolution and mod support — and it is why these run well on modest hardware.

Decompilation of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

How to install

  1. 01First things first: this is a decompilation, not a playable port. The project states outright that it does not, and will not, produce a PC port. There is no executable to download and play.
  2. 02What it does is rebuild the source code of Majora's Mask from the binary, so that compiling it returns a ROM identical to the original.
  3. 03The only version supported today is the N64 US release. The intent is to cover the other retail versions over time — but not Majora's Mask 3D, which is a different game.
  4. 04The repository includes no assets and no assembly: building requires your own copy of the game, which the data is extracted from.
  5. 05A build returns mm-n64-us.z64 (MD5 f46493eaa0628827dbd6ad3ecd8d65d6) and the compressed mm-n64-us-compressed.z64 (MD5 2a0a8acb61538235bc1094d297fb6556). Checking those MD5s is how you know it worked.
  6. 06The environment steps live in the README Installation section, per operating system, and they change often — follow the README rather than a memorised recipe.
  7. 07The code is still moving: parts of the ROM are not yet shiftable, so modifying certain areas is currently hard, and the structure can change without warning. To play Majora's Mask on PC, what exists is 2 Ship 2 Harkinian, a different project in this catalog.

Frequently asked

Do I need the original game to play The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on PC?

Yes. The project distributes no game data — you supply your own copy or dump. Every project in this scene works this way, and it is what lets them stay publicly hosted on GitHub.

What does "native" mean?

This is a native port: the game was rebuilt to run as a real PC program with no emulator in the loop. That usually means better performance, arbitrary resolution and mod support — and it is why these run well on modest hardware.

Will The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask run on a low-end PC?

Native ports and recompilations skip CPU emulation entirely, so they are usually far lighter than an emulator for the same console. With no published measurement for this project, though, any estimate would be guesswork — test it on your own machine.

When was The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask released?

The original game shipped in 2000, developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo. This PC port is from 2026.

Which systems does it support?

The current release ships builds for Windows. The game originally shipped on Nintendo 64.

Is it legal to use?

The project is public and open source, maintained by zeldaret, and contains nothing from the commercial game. Responsibility for the game copy you use is yours — which is why the developers require you to supply your own.
