CPS-2 Recomp

Arcade CPS-2 Recomp running on PC through recompiled. Free and complete.

How this port works

This is a static recompilation: tooling mechanically translates the original console binary into PC code rather than rewriting the game by hand. The result runs natively, typically with an uncapped framerate and widescreen.

CPS-2 Recomp: unofficial native PC ports of Capcom CPS-2 arcade games (Street Fighter Alpha 2, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Vampire Savior) via static recompilation, with training modes, in one launcher: macOS, Linux, Steam Deck, Windows. Requires your own ROM sets. Beta.

How to install

  1. 01Each game here is made from one exact ROM set revision, and sets of other regions and revisions are refused: the features use addresses found in that specific program.
  2. 02The accepted sets are sfa (Europe 950727), sfa2u (USA 960430), sgemf (USA 970904), xmvsf (Europe 961004), spf2t (Europe 960529), vsavj (Japan 970519), vsav2 (Japan 970913), vhunt2 (Japan 970929), avspu (USA 940520) and dino (World 930201). Vampire Savior Definitive needs both vsavj and vsav2.
  3. 03Each set goes in as a zip (with its parent set zip beside it, if your collection keeps the shared files there) or as a folder of the set files. For a CPS-2 game, the set must include its key file.
  4. 04Download the build for your system from the releases page and unpack it. Open the launcher and, on its Games page, pick the folder where you keep your ROM sets: it finds each game by the set name. You can also drop a set, or the folder, on the window.
  5. 05The launcher checks every file by checksum and tells you which one is missing or different. Your sets stay where they are.
  6. 06Press Play beside a game. Several can run at once, each in its own window. While playing, Esc or F1 opens the in-game menu.
  7. 07On macOS the app is not notarized: the first time, right-click it and choose Open. And move the app into Applications before opening it, because the launcher needs to be able to write to its own folder to update itself.

Frequently asked

Do I need the original game to play CPS-2 Recomp on PC?

No. CPS-2 Recomp is free and complete: download the release and run it, with no ROM, dump or commercial game copy.

What does "recompiled" mean?

This is a static recompilation: tooling mechanically translates the original console binary into PC code rather than rewriting the game by hand. The result runs natively, typically with an uncapped framerate and widescreen.

Will CPS-2 Recomp run on a low-end PC?

Native ports and recompilations skip CPU emulation entirely, so they are usually far lighter than an emulator for the same console. With no published measurement for this project, though, any estimate would be guesswork — test it on your own machine.

Which systems does it support?

The current release (v0.4.0-beta.3) ships builds for Windows, Linux, macOS. The game originally shipped on Arcade.

Is it legal to use?

The project is public and open source, maintained by tmcleroy, and contains nothing from the commercial game. Responsibility for the game copy you use is yours — which is why the developers require you to supply your own.
