PSX Recomp Ports

PlayStation PSX Recomp Ports running on PC through recompiled. Free and complete.

How this port works

This is a static recompilation: tooling mechanically translates the original console binary into PC code rather than rewriting the game by hand. The result runs natively, typically with an uncapped framerate and widescreen.

Unofficial noncommercial PlayStation recompilation releases

How to install

  1. 01Each download here is a build kit, not a playable executable: it contains no disc data, no BIOS, no generated code and no prebuilt game. You supply the dump of the matching original disc, and the kit generates the title on your PC.
  2. 02Wave 1 kits (v0.2.3) require the retail BIOS they ask for, from your own console. Wave 2 kits (v0.3.0, v0.3.3, v0.3.4) recommend a retail SCPH BIOS matching the game region, and already include the MIT-licensed OpenBIOS as a fallback.
  3. 03Extract one kit at a time into a normal writable folder, outside Program Files — for example Documents\PSXRecomp.
  4. 04On the older Windows kits, the step is SETUP.bat: it asks for disc 1 CUE and the requested BIOS, downloads the hash-pinned tools and builds the executable locally. The first setup takes several minutes. After that PLAY.bat opens the launcher, where you assign keyboard or a gamepad to each player card.
  5. 05Wave 3 and Wave 4 kits have their own setup instructions: follow the ones for the release you downloaded rather than the SETUP.bat steps.
  6. 06The locally built executable is not signed, so Windows may warn about an unknown publisher. To check a kit yourself, compare the download SHA-256 with the .sha256 beside it or with the release SHA256SUMS.txt.
  7. 07In game, F1 opens the menu: fullscreen and window modes, presentation, texture filtering, volume, controller-port routing, and changing disc for the session.
  8. 08A stated limitation: most titles have an automated startup-survival pass, not an end-to-end completion claim. Read the notes and the COMPATIBILITY.md of the release you pick.

Frequently asked

Do I need the original game to play PSX Recomp Ports on PC?

No. PSX Recomp Ports is free and complete: download the release and run it, with no ROM, dump or commercial game copy.

What does "recompiled" mean?

This is a static recompilation: tooling mechanically translates the original console binary into PC code rather than rewriting the game by hand. The result runs natively, typically with an uncapped framerate and widescreen.

Will PSX Recomp Ports run on a low-end PC?

Native ports and recompilations skip CPU emulation entirely, so they are usually far lighter than an emulator for the same console. With no published measurement for this project, though, any estimate would be guesswork — test it on your own machine.

Which systems does it support?

The current release (v0.3.4) ships builds for Windows. The game originally shipped on PlayStation.

Is it legal to use?

The project is public and open source, maintained by alexbeavs-ps1-ports, and contains nothing from the commercial game. Responsibility for the game copy you use is yours — which is why the developers require you to supply your own.
